This post is about how to paint furniture with chalk paint and get amazing results.
I’ve always liked to save money on projects. I am not by any means a “big spender”. I often opt to do DIY projects or purchase something very inexpensive and transform it to my design aesthetic. This was especially the case when we moved from a tiny apartment to a 2,400 sq. ft. home. We needed to fill our home with furniture we didn’t have. When it came to the dining room, I knew I didn’t want a matching new set. I wanted a look that felt worn and lived in and had an old-world European feel. I wound up finding great deals on a new dining room table and a set of french-style chairs. Hutches and buffet tables on the other hand can be pretty pricey, especially ones with the look I wanted. This is where I decided to get creative. Keep reading to find out how to easily paint furniture using chalk paint. There is very little preparation using this method and you get amazing results.
Paint Furniture With Chalk Paint
Painting furniture does not have to be a long arduous process. You can get amazing results using chalk paint, and the best part is that it does not require sanding beforehand. This process is so easy, anyone can do it! I list here the steps I took to paint an old dresser that I got for free and an old hutch that I got on Facebook Marketplace for only $60! I painted both these pieces over one weekend and they both turned out incredible.
Step 1: Remove Hardware
You want to remove any hardware so they don’t get painted on. If you are refreshing an old piece, this gives you a chance to clean up any old hardware or completely change it.
Step 2: Clean It Up
Make sure you furniture piece is free of dust or dirt. Use a natural cleaner to get your furniture piece paint ready!
Step 3: Ready To Paint
Your furniture is ready for paint. Using a quality brush like this one here, start brushing your furniture piece. You can brush the paint on in any direction, just make sure you are applying a nice even coat all over. I used chalk paint by Annie Sloan in the color Paris Grey.
Step 4: Light Sanding In Between Coats
Chalk paint only takes a couple hours to dry, so once your furniture piece is dry to the touch give it a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper. This will ensure your furniture piece comes out nice and smooth in the end. For me, one coat of chalk paint was enough but you may need to do more than one coat depending on the type of wood you are painting or the look you are going for.
Step 5: Finishing Wax
The final step after sanding is to apply the wax finish. You will again use a nice quality brush like this one here. Apply the wax in all directions with your brush, and wipe away any excess with a clean lint-free cloth. You’re done! Make sure to handle your furniture piece carefully for the first couple weeks as the chalk paint and wax finish is “curing” or hardening.
Chalk Paint and Brushes
If you have some furniture that needs updating and you’re dying to give it a fresh coat of paint, no worries! The easiest way to instantly update your piece of furniture is by using chalk paint. ESPECIALLY if you are pressed for time. I mean… not everyone has hours upon hours to spend on painting furniture the traditional way right?! Here is some supplies you will need.
