This post is all about ideas for a timeless Christmas.

Christmas is just around the corner, are you all done decorating your home for Christmas? This is my favorite time of year and it’s always so much fun to decorate for the season. One thing I’ve noticed is how my decorating style has changed over the years. Every year there are few decorating items that don’t make it out of the box. Those items tend to be the things that were “trending” at the time or things that I bought for very little money that just don’t look good anymore. I didn’t like the idea of having to go out and buy all new Christmas decorations every year, do you?! So, what I started doing was really thinking about what decorating items I can buy for my home that is not a “trend” and will remain timeless. Really think about your design aesthetic and what pieces will adhere to your aesthetic so you’re not getting tired of something the very next year. Starting with this “base” of items will really make decorating for Christmas so easy each year, and you’ll have more time to think of some new up-to-the-minute ideas to freshen up your décor! Read on to learn how to decorate for a timeless Christmas <3

You can’t decorate for Christmas without a Christmas tree! Well…I guess you can, but why would you want to?! Whether you like to go real or buy faux, you want to have a Christmas tree that looks great in your home. There are so many styles of trees, real or fake. But if you are purchasing a fake tree, I would try to stay away from the unrealistic looking trees and flocked trees. You want to pick out a tree that looks as natural as possible, how you would find them in nature. Other style trees that may be “in” one year can very easily be “out” the following year. Pick out a classic tree that will never look outdated.

What pairs well with a classic Christmas tree are some classic Christmas ornaments. So, here I don’t think you need to go out and buy actual vintage ornaments. You can look for true vintage in places like thrift stores, Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, etc. But another great option is to buy new ornaments that look vintage. A couple years back I found a great deal on a large pack of ornaments at Home Goods, and they had beautiful vintage designs that looked so timeless. I have seen second-hand ornaments with nearly identical designs on them. Feel free to mix your vintage ornaments with your more personal ornaments because you don’t want to lose touch with what’s important to you! At the end of the day, it’s those ornaments that hold memories and your children’s hand-made ornaments that are the most special to you.

Stockings hanging from your fireplace, so classic! What is not so classic are the personalized stockings that are 10+ years old that clash with your Christmas decor. Yes, they are very special to us and could be hard to let go. I for one am guilty of this, I have yet to let go of our personalized Christmas stockings. I tell myself, “one day”. But I can admit they don’t go at all with my design aesthetic. If you are not emotionally attached to your stockings, or don’t have any yet, buy ones with a neutral color that will remain timeless in your home.

I LOVE garland. Adding garland in various places in your home elevates your space for the holidays. I especially love adding garland above door frames. There is something so inviting about walking through a doorway decorated with beautiful greenery.

I only recently added rustic bells to my Christmas décor, and I have already found so many uses for them. I love the old-world charm it adds to your space. The ones I have are antique brass and are so lovely!

source

Wreaths everywhere! I am one of these people that decorate with wreaths all year long, and I have at least one wreath for every season. Christmas however, I’ve lost count of how many wreaths I have. One of my favorite things to do at the beginning of the holiday season is hang a wreath in front of each window. It adds so much charm to my colonial home, I love it! I also like to add a wreath to my chicken coop because isn’t that just darling?!

I mentioned at the beginning of this post to think about your design aesthetic and the look you would like to achieve for the Christmas season. Once you have nailed that down, carry your style throughout the home. Really try not to mish mash different styles, even if you’re decorating different spaces that are closed off from one another. You want to be able to walk through your home and have one cohesive look.

Bows are definitely a staple in Christmas décor. It wouldn’t be a classic Christmas without bows. With so many styles and colors available, you are sure to find bows that match your design aesthetic. I especially love making simple bows out of velvet ribbon. And don’t forget, Christmas bows don’t have to be red! You can turn any color that matches your style and make it look festive.

Lighting is personal preference. Some people love the multi colors, and I think it can look very pretty in the right setting. But my personal preference is the warm white lighting. Adding warm lights to your tree and on other things such as garlands, wreaths, etc. can give your home such a nice ambience for the holiday season. There is something magical about a glowing house during this time of year. I often find myself walking around my home at night just to enjoy all the twinkling lights!

10 Timeless Christmas Decorating Ideas
